Disaster relief miracle in Hurricane Ike
I am amazed, not surprised, amazed at how God works. Let me share a miracle that happened today in Galveston, Texas. First let me share why I am in Galveston.
Hurricane Ike, swept through the gulf coast on August 29th, 2008, three years after hurricane Katrina destroyed much of coastal Alabama, coastal Missisiipi, New Orleans, and many other locations along the gulf. Hurricanes are powerful storms. They destroy homes, businesses, schools, hospitals, churches, and peoples lives. In a disaster people desperately need help.I am here to help people, to be the hands and feet of Christ.
The ministry of COI has a heart and passion for disaster relief and so do I. Why? Because Jesus told us in the book of James that true religion is taking care of widows and orphans. Another way to say it is taking care of those who have suffered loss.
Now to the miracle. We had the privilege for the last two days to work with another organization that feeds those who have lost so much. We served hundreds of meals to people. Now I have a heart to serve God, it doesn’t matter to me how or where. I am just as happy to wash dishes or open and drain hundreds of cans of tuna or chicken. I love to serve people with the love of Christ. But I am passionate about chaplaincy type of work. Talking with hurting people and praying with them and crying with them and sharing the love and forgiveness of Jesus.
As I was meeting with people and handing out meals two biker guys came by. Long hair, leather jacket, and very sad. They have been struggling to make ends meet, they had been alcoholics for years and one of them had his young daughter die in a car accident seven years earlier. They were two guys, just like you and I, except for how they dressed and presented themselves. I asked if I could pray for them about anything and they asked me to pray for their situation of having lost so much,so I did. I then asked if I could pray for them to be delivered from alcohol and its vices and they said yes please, as tears rolled down their cheeks.
I then asked if they knew Jesus in their lives and if they knew his forgiveness. One shared that years ago he had prayed for Christ’s forgiveness at a Billy Graham crusade but had turned his back on God. The other shared that his wife and mother had been praying for his salvation for years. Today they both prayed and accepted Christ into their lives. They were no creations. They commented on how they felt Jesus had really set them free.
The miracle is salvation. The miracle is that God would take a person like me all the way from Canada to Galveston, Texas to share his love.
Join us on a short term mission trip. Come to help out in hurricane relief. It will impact you and it will impact others too. Praise Jesus.
